On Huffington Post: Genre-defying Talent Soars at Red Wing Roots III, FloydFest 14

Red Wing Roots III

Three years ago The Steel Wheels started their own boutique, summer music festival Red Wing Roots Music Festival in mid-July in the shadow of Natural Chimneys Park in Mt. Solon, Virginia. If you missed it, I suggest you add it to your summer music festival wish list for next year. Make sure to get your tickets early. After this year’s amazing lineup and (mostly) spectacular weather and surrounding scenery, great local food offerings and even better craft beer, this event that’s limited to about 3,500 is sure to sell out quickly in 2016. Robert Earl Keen put on an amazing performance as well as The Punch Brothers, Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan and Chatham County Line, among many others. But it was the following discoveries that we listened to in the car on the drive home.

Rooster Walk 7 adds five more bands to lineup including Donna the Buffalo, PBR

Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival has added five more bands to its already impressive lineup for Rooster Walk 7 set for May 21-14 at Pop’s Farm in Axton, Va.  The acts are MerleFest and FloydFest favorites Donna the Buffalo as well as the People’s Blues of Richmond, Stop Light Observations, The Congress and Anthony Rosano & The Conqueroos.  Continue reading

Lake Street Dive added to Rooster Walk 7 lineup

Color me impressed. Just a few years ago, one of my friends mentioned that she thought I would enjoy Rooster Walk, an annual grassroots music festival held just outside Martinsville, Va. She knew I was a diehard MerleFest and FloydFest fan and thought I should check out this festival that was family friendly, and much closer to my Madison, N.C., home. At her suggestion, I took a look at the lineup. My first reaction was: “I’ve never heard of any of these bands.” Continue reading

Drive-By Truckers, Leftover Salmon, Shovels and Rope, Greensky Bluegrass and Sam Bush announced among FloydFest 14 initial lineup

FLOYD, Va. — On the heels of MerleFest’s initial lineup announcement comes one from FloydFest. “Fire on the Mountain,” otherwise known as FloydFest 14, will return to the 170.5 milepost of Blue Ridge Parkway on July 22 to 26, 2015, with a renaissance of thick, rich newgrass, Americana and rock, according to organizers.
