Don’t confuse 75th Annual National Folk Festival headliner Dale Watson’s music with today’s country
Fans of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Sturgill Simpson are in for a treat at this weekend’s 75th annual National Folk Festival in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. The free outdoor event features performances and demonstrations on seven outdoor stages by more than 300 of the nation’s craftspeople, dancers and musicians, including country music maverick Dale Watson, who is set to perform his unique mix of Texas swing, rockabilly and honky tonk tunes for the first time in the Piedmont, tonight at 8 on the Wrangler Stage stage, Saturday at 8:30 p.m. on the Belk Stage and a Sunday workshop at 2:15 p.m.
But don’t confuse Watson with country music, at least not by today’s standards. “You can easily guess who my influences are listening to my music,” he said in a recent phone interview. “Today’s country influences come from boy bands. They have more in common with Madonna.”

The June event drew more than 600 attendees, according to organizers.

Three years ago The Steel Wheels started their own boutique, summer music festival Red Wing Roots Music Festival in mid-July in the shadow of Natural Chimneys Park in Mt. Solon, Virginia. If you missed it, I suggest you add it to your summer music festival wish list for next year. Make sure to get your tickets early. After this year’s amazing lineup and (mostly) spectacular weather and surrounding scenery, great local food offerings and even better craft beer, this event that’s limited to about 3,500 is sure to sell out quickly in 2016. Robert Earl Keen put on an amazing performance as well as The Punch Brothers, Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan and Chatham County Line, among many others. But it was the following discoveries that we listened to in the car on the drive home.
