MerleFest, presented by Window World, is proud to announce the next round of artist additions for MerleFest 2020, which will be held April 23-26. Greensky Bluegrass, Mavis Staples, Paul Thorn, Cane Mill Road, Sweet Potato Pie, The Barefoot Movement, Nefesh Mountain, and Smitty and the Jumpstarters will be joining the annual homecoming of musicians and music fans on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Greensky Bluegrass: “There’s this great duality to our band,” reflects Greensky Bluegrass mandolinist vocalist and songwriter Paul Hoffman. “We’re existing in a few different places at once. We’re a bluegrass band and a rock band. We’re song-driven and interested in extended improvisation.” Formed in 2000 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Greensky Bluegrass kicked off their career playing living rooms and open mic nights across the Midwest. By 2005, they were touring nationally, and by 2006, they were playing the first in a long series of appearances at the annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Bandmates Hoffman, Bruzza, dobro player Anders Beck, banjoist Michael Arlen Bont, and upright bassist Mike Devol spent most of the following decade on the road, fine-tuning a live show modeled not after the toned-down production of traditional bluegrass music, but the full-on spectacle of rock. Despite the total and tragic loss of the historic Rives Theatre in a fire in February 2019, the show must go on and the Arts at the Rives opening party concert promises to be as entertaining as ever!
This show will take place at Forest Park Country Club in Martinsville, Virginia. For $125 per ticket, you will receive entry to this show, which includes open bar (beer, wine, liquor) and catered dinner, as well as a Season Pass to the 2020 Rives On The Road concert series. The concert series will feature at least 4 more shows over the course of 2020. The revenue generated by Season Pass sales helps us offer world-class programming throughout the 2020 year. Fresh off the release of their latest single, International Bluegrass Music Association’s award-winning The Barefoot Movement will bring their heartfelt, energetic and down home holiday celebration at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, to the Cary Arts Center.
Complete with all of your classic seasonal favorites wrapped in a Christmas package, you’ll hear acoustic renditions of everything from Chuck Berry’s “Run Run Rudolph” to Perry Como’s “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas” and emotional takes on the more tender songs of the season like “Oh Holy Night” and “Hark The Herald Angels Sing,” according to a press release.

Scythian is making its debut at The Ramkat on Saturday, Nov. 23, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It’s the last chance you have to catch the band performing live in 2019 before they head into the studio to record a new album.
But if you want to see this talented group, whom I have affectionately dubbed MerleFest’s house band, you’ll have to stand because all the seated tickets are already sold out. But that’s OK. If you are at all familiar with this Celtic rock band, you won’t be doing any sitting at the show because you’ll be too busy dancing.

MerleFest offers a three-tiered pricing structure and encourages fans to take advantage of the extended early bird discount. Early Bird Tier 1 tickets may be purchased from November 12 to February 16, 2020; Early Bird Tier 2 tickets from February 17 to April 22. Remaining tickets will be sold at the gate during the festival.
Country music fans, listen up: If you missed singer-songwriter Kelsey Waldon’s performance at Hopscotch 10, you’re in luck. You can catch her playing at Chapel Hill’s Local 506 on Wednesday, Nov. 6; The Grey Eagle in Asheville, Nov. 7; and The Evening Muse in Charlotte, Nov. 8.
Waldon was recently handpicked by Americana legend John Prine to join his label Oh Boy Records, which released her new album “White Noise/White Lines,” produced with Dan Knobler.
What makes this significant is Waldon is the first new artist to sign with the label in 15 years.
“It’s hard for me to put into words what it truly means to me to be signed to Oh Boy Records,” Waldon said in a release. “To have someone like John, who I have looked up to my whole life, who I have set my songwriting standards after and my general music-making standards after, to have someone like him endorse my music and care enough about it to make sure it reaches a wider audience…that means everything.”
Prine echoes the excitement by stating in a release, “Kelsey’s voice is one of the more authentic country voices I’ve heard in a long time. Her music continues an important arc of traditional folk and country music.”
Halloween may be over but fans of Americana music are in for a special treat as two talented duos — Violet Bell and Zoe & Cloyd — hit the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Cary Arts Center.

Zoe & Cloyd, who I first discovered at MerleFest, is made up of renowned fiddler and vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist John Cloyd Miller. Together, they delight audiences with soaring harmonies and heartfelt songwriting, seamlessly combining original folk, country, old-time and bluegrass with sincerity and zeal.
Zoe and Cloyd recently released their third album, “I Am Your Neighbor,” on Friday, Sept. 27, on Organic Records during the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) annual event in downtown Raleigh.
