Give yourself the musical gift of a Chatham County Line Electric Holiday Tour show this weekend

If, like me, you missed a chance to catch Chatham County Line’s “electric” show, you’re in luck.

The Raleigh, North Carolina-based acoustic string ensemble played the set last year at MerleFest and the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA)’s annual festival.

But they’re far from done.

These harmonic boys, whose music has been described as falling somewhere between Del McCoury and the Jayhawks, are back in Richmond, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; and Saxapahaw, North Carolina, over the next three days.

Molly Tuttle is poised to make history at IBMA 2017

If you haven’t heard the music of Molly Tuttle, rest assured, after this week you will.

The newest artist to sign on to the Compass Records roster, she’s the first woman in the 27-year history of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards to be nominated for Guitar Player of the Year, the only instrumental category that had not yet nominated a woman. She’s also nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. The 2017 Awards Show will be held Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Memorial Hall. Continue reading →

Take advantage of IBMA’s free 2017 Streetfest music

If you don’t have a coveted ticket to the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) World of Bluegrass’s incredible lineup on the Wide Open Main Stage this year, don’t despair. There is more than enough free music to take in on Friday and Saturday as more than 100 bands perform on seven stages along Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. A number of the free acts are also playing on the main stage including Molly Tuttle, Tim O’Brien and The Kruger Brothers, just to name a few.

Performers include a broad mix of local, national and international talent. The dance tent will feature clogging performances, participatory square dances, and late-night open dancing Friday and Saturday nights. 2017 Wide Open Bluegrass features Steep Canyon Rangers, Steve Martin, The Infamous Stringdusters and many more

If bluegrass music has a Super Bowl, it’s the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) World of Bluegrass week — the world’s largest urban bluegrass festival. The festival kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 26, with the Bluegrass Ramble and wraps up Friday, Sept. 29, and Saturday, Sept. 30, with Wide Open Bluegrass 2017 presented by PNC at the Red Hat Amphitheater in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina.

In between is a business conference featuring Greensboro’s own Rhiannon Giddens as the keynote speaker and exhibits at the Raleigh Convention Center, as well as the 28th Annual IBMA Awards Show hosted by Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn — acclaimed artists in their respective careers and GRAMMY winners in their duo work — Thursday night at the Duke Performing Arts Center.

No self-respecting North Carolina event is complete without barbecue. The North Carolina Pork Council will once again host the 2017 Whole Hog Barbecue Championship as part of Wide Open Bluegrass. The best whole hog barbecue chefs in North Carolina square off to become state champion. After the judges have had their say, the mouth-watering barbecue will be chopped and sold in sandwiches Saturday to festival attendees.

The Bluegrass Situation, PineCone present second annual ‘Shout and Shine: A Celebration of Diversity in Bluegrass’ during IBMA’s 2017 ‘World of Bluegrass’

The Bluegrass Situation and PineCone have announced that the second annual “Shout & Shine: A Celebration of Diversity in Bluegrass” will take place during the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2017 World of Bluegrass business conference. The showcase, which works to foster representation and inclusion of the diverse artists, musicians and professionals who love and create bluegrass and roots music, will be held from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at The Pour House in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is part of IBMA’s official showcase schedule/lineup, The Bluegrass Ramble. Catch Nashville’s Forlorn Strangers at Appaloosa Roots Music Festival, IBMA’s Wide Open Bluegrass, Front Porch Fest

I had the pleasure of catching the Forlorn Strangers, a foot-stomping, Nashville-based string quintet, at the Lincoln Theatre in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, a few weeks ago when they opened for Celtic rockers Scythian at an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA)  Wide Open Bluegrass preview show for its upcoming festival Sept. 29-30.

It also turned out to be a preview show for Scythian’s Appaloosa Roots Music Festival set for Sept. 1-3 in Front Royal, Virginia, at which both Scythian and Forlorn Strangers are set to perform. And Front Porch Fest fans will be happy to know they can catch Forlorn Strangers at the festival on Sept. 3 in Stuart, Virginia.

Scythian, Forlorn Strangers to give Wide Open Bluegrass preview at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh on Saturday, July 15

If you can hardly wait for Sept. 26-30 and the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) World of Bluegrass Festival and PNC’s Wide Open Bluegrass, the weekend festival on Sept. 29-30 in downtown Raleigh that takes place during the IBMA event, you’re in luck.

You can catch two of the Wide Open Bluegrass acts — MerleFest favorite Celtic roots rockers Scythian and Nashville’s Forlorn Strangers — at a “Save the Date” party beginning at 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh. This all-ages show will also serve as a CD Release Party for Scythian’s newest album, “Dance All Night.”

Mountain Faith to perform on April 7 at Duke Energy Center in Raleigh

Mountain Faith, the 2016 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Emerging Artist of the Year, is heading back to downtown Raleigh at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 7, to perform at the Duke Energy Center.

The bluegrass, folk and gospel family band that hails from Sylva, North Carolina, has been playing its unique brand of music since 2000.

The band is made up of Summer McMahan, Brayden McMahan, Sam McMahan, Cory Piatt and Luke Dotson.

In 2015, the band made it to the semifinal round on the popular TV show “America’s Got Talent” propelled by Mountain Faith’s unique cover of the OneRepublic hit “Counting Stars.” The same year the band traveled to the Persian Gulf and performed six concerts for our men and women serving in the military.

The group’s most recent project is “Battlefield.”

77th National Folk Festival announces initial performer lineup

The National Folk Festival has announced the first group of artists who will be performing in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina, from Sept. 8 – 10, 2017. The 77th National Folk Festival in 2017 marks the event’s third and final year of its three-year residency in North Carolina’s Piedmont. Organizers report that based on the success of the National Folk Festival, a feasibility study is currently underway toward launching a legacy North Carolina Folk Festival in 2018.
