American Aquarium plans to bring the band’s “Roadtrip To Raleigh” eighth annual event back to the Lincoln Theatre on Feb. 2-4, 2023, the band has announced.

That Music Fest presented by Come Hear NC is a two-day music festival celebrating the artists who make music right here in North Carolina! The North Carolina State Fair always sports a great music lineup and this year is no exception. Its “Homegrown Music Fest” concert series features 11 days, three stages and 117 performances from Oct. 11-21. My advice is that while you’ll certainly want to catch some of the headliners — Raleigh’s own American Aquarium, the War and Treaty, New Reveille, Summer Brooke and the Mountain Faith Band, RaeLynn and Bucky Covington — make sure you catch some of the lesser-known acts on the Waterfall andHeritage Circle Bluegrass stages.
It wasn’t that many years ago that I discovered country, rock superstar singer-songwriter Eric Church, who as you may recall is a North Carolina native, playing for a small crowd at the fairgrounds’ Dorton Arena. Tickets were $5 because at the time you had to pay extra for concert tickets. Good luck finding a $5 or even $50 ticket to one of Church’s shows today.
Dorton Arena shows begin at 7:30 p.m. each night. Lineup for the show begins no earlier than 6 p.m. and doors are at 7 p.m. Each show is free with State Fair admission, and seating in the arena is first-come, first-served general admission.
I recommend making time to see Jack the Radio, the Pinkerton Raid, Katie Basden, Jump Mountain, David Childers, Big Fat Gap and Carolina Line Bluegrass Band among many others too numerous to list on the Waterfall and Heritage Circle Bluegrass stages.

Fans of American Aquarium, Town Mountain, Love Canon, the Snyder Family Band and Big Daddy Love won’t want to miss the fifth annual The Shindig Music Festival rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 13. There will be 10 bands on two stages plus seven breweries on tap, including Foothills and Bull City.
American Aquarium, Corey Hunt Band and Seth Williams will perform at Muddy Creek Music Hall on Thursday, Oct. 27. Both BJ Barham, frontman for American Aquarium, and Williams are Reidsville natives.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. show at 5455 Bethania Road in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, are $22 in advance and $25 at the door.
BJ Barham is returning to his hometown of Reidsville, North Carolina, to debut his solo album, “Rockingham,” at a free show at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Market Square, downtown at the corner of Settle and Scales streets. A sampling of his new album on YouTube reveals that this one show you don’t want to miss.
Rockingham County natives can spot familiar sites in this video as well as relate to what can only be assumed are also familiar sentiments:
“Won’t you take me back to where I am from, where the air’s as thick as tobacco gum, where I was born, where I was raised, on broken promises and glory days.
“It’s the town where I became a man, it’s the place that made me who I am, right there on the river Dan … Rockingham.”
The frontman for the band, American Aquarium, released the album on Aug. 19. No Depression writes, “Teeming with the dark realism of lost hope, small towns and shattered dreams, Rockingham’s authentic stories are absolutely felt by the listener (whether or not you are a farmer, parent or elder), cementing Barham’s place as a songwriter with an ability to capture depth and emotion that is on par with few others.”
