Six questions with Will Overman Band

Will Overman may be the busiest man in Americana music. I used to think Jerry Douglas was until I met Overman, who is the front man of his band of the same name, which is affectionately referred to by fans as WOB. The 21-year-old sociology major at the University of Virginia works part-time in a soup shop and spends every other spare minute writing songs — songs with lyrics and melodies that belie his youth — booking gigs and marketing his band’s music, which has been described as “amped-up” folk rock. Building on the success of the inaugural concert event in June, Flow Honda and Phuzz Phest will present the second volume of “Sunset Thursdays,” its free community concert series on Thursday, Aug. 13, at Bailey Park in the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The June event drew more than 600 attendees, according to organizers.

Three years ago The Steel Wheels started their own boutique, summer music festival Red Wing Roots Music Festival in mid-July in the shadow of Natural Chimneys Park in Mt. Solon, Virginia. If you missed it, I suggest you add it to your summer music festival wish list for next year. Make sure to get your tickets early. After this year’s amazing lineup and (mostly) spectacular weather and surrounding scenery, great local food offerings and even better craft beer, this event that’s limited to about 3,500 is sure to sell out quickly in 2016. Robert Earl Keen put on an amazing performance as well as The Punch Brothers, Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan and Chatham County Line, among many others. But it was the following discoveries that we listened to in the car on the drive home.
