Scythian to perform at The Forum on Friday, June 17, in Arlington, Virginia

Fans may be surprised to learn that the founding members of Scythian, a Washington, D.C.-based Celtic rock band, didn’t like Irish music originally.

But when brothers Alexander and Danylo Fedoryka were in college at the  Franciscan University of Stuebenville, Ohio, Alex became obsessed with an Irish fiddler. Alex, who was a classically trained musician, said, “What is that? Whatever that is, I’ve got to do it.”

Zoe & Cloyd to perform at Reynolda House Summertime Social on June 9

According to our friends at Reynolda House Museum of American Art, it’s not officially summer until you’ve toasted with friends in Reynolda’s Winston-Salem, North Carolina, back yard. Bring a blanket and enjoy food trucks, drinks from local vendors, lawn games, excellent music and an after-hours opportunity to visit “Ansel Adams: Eloquent Light” beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 9.

2016 Charlie Poole Music Festival set for June 10-11

The 2016 Charlie Poole Music Festival will be held June 10-11 at Governor Morehead Park, 422 Church St., in Eden, North Carolina. Governor Morehead Park is located on the site of the first textile mill in the region, built in 1839 by John Motley Morehead. The park is owned and operated by the Eden Preservation Society.

Rooster Walk, Red Wing, FloydFest make Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine’s best Southern festivals list

Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival, Red Wing Roots Music Festival and FloydFest are three of my favorites. It seems Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine agrees naming two of the Virginia festivals as well as Black Mountain, North Carolina’s LEAF among 2016’s top family-friendly festivals to attend in the South. ‘MerleFest on the Road’ offers a sneak peek of annual festival

While you’re thawing out from the latest blow Old Man Winter has landed, here’s a thought that should warm you: It’s only 72 days until MerleFest,  which is set for April 28-May 1 on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

For the first time, MerleFest, the music festival founded in 1988 by the legendary Doc Watson in honor of his son and fellow musician Eddy Merle Watson, will offer music lovers a sneak peek of this spring’s festival when “MerleFest On the Road” tours throughout the Southeast during March. The tour will feature select artists scheduled to perform at MerleFest 2016: Tellico, High Plains Jamboree and Zoe & Cloyd. Continue reading

Performers announced for 76th National Folk Festival Celebrating Its Second Year in North Carolina Sept. 9–11
